Kitagawa Industries (Naka-Ku, Nagoya, President Koji Kitagawa) and British Council (U.K. head office: London, Japan head office: Shinjuku-Ku, Tokyo, Deputy Director Mike Winter) will, with assistance from Morinobu Endo, Engineering professor of Shinshu University, and Inazawa Board of Education, host a workshop titled "The Celestial Sphere that Fell to Earth" on Friday, November 1 atKitagawa Industries' Inazawa Office (695-1 Higashi-Orido, Mukuicho, Inazawa, Aichi). In this workshop, Sir Harold Professor Kroto, 1996 Nobel Chemistry laureate, will talk to 78 freshmen of Chiyoda Junior high school of Inazawa City. Sir Kroto is a Royal Society Research Professor at the University of Sussex, U.K. He also serves as Chairman of the Royal Chemistry Society and founded the Vega Science Trust in 1994 to promote science education for youth.
Professor Kroto will give a lecture titled “The Story of the Buckyball,” in which he will talk about a molecule whose structure looks similar to a succor ball (buckyball), which he discovered himself. Then he will let students make a model of buckyball and explain the molecular structure in ways easy to understand. Professor Morinobu Endo will serve as coordinator and provide supplementary explanation.
While much emphasis is placed on promotion of science and technology in recent years, young people are found to be being alienated from science and mathematics. Against this backdrop, this workshop aims to have junior high school students experience pleasure of science and provoke their interest in science. This workshop is also a part of the efforts of Kitagawa Industries and British Council to contribute to the community and international cultural interchange.
Kitagawa Industries has invited Professor Kroto, under the auspices of professor Endo, several times to Japan to give a lecture. It started from 1991, before Professor Kroto won the Nobel Prize. This the 6th of such events.
British Council is U.K.'s public institution for cultural interchange. As a part of their efforts to promote scientific and technological interchange between U.K. and Japan, they host a science lectures in Shiojiri, Nagano and other places in Japan. This is the fourth of Professor Kroto's workshop for young students.
